Photography Workshop: Photo Editing
20 May 2018, 10:00 - 15:00 ( Add to calendar )
If you enjoy taking photos but you are not confident in your ability to edit them – then this course is perfect for you. We will be using one of the most common software editing packages available, Adobe Photoshop Elements 14, to learn how to maximise the beauty of your images. This relaxed course combines the practical aspects of taking photographs in the woodland surrounding the Nower Wood Educational Nature Reserve with the follow- through of editing them on the same day.
We will spend the morning taking photographs outside followed by a tutorial on the basic functions of Photoshop Elements 14. There will then be practical exercises using images provided by the tutor after which you can try out your newly acquired skills on your own photos taken that day.
The key skills that your tutor will demonstrate are: • How to download, store and catalogue your images • Rate your images • RAW & JPEG – the vital differences, advantages and disadvantages • Cropping • Straightening & rotating • Red eye removal • Eliminating unwanted elements in your image • Adding text • Resizing for optimal print/web/screen results • Sharpening • Printing • Camera settings and speeds • Managing brightness, shadows & highlights
It is vital that you learn the above on your own equipment. Therefore, we ask that you bring ALL of the following:
• Your laptop with antivirus software installed as well as Photoshop Elements 14 or a later version. Please ensure that you do not have anything earlier than 14. • The means to download photos from your camera to your laptop. (camera to laptop cable/card reader/Bluetooth, etc.) • All cameras are welcome, but a DSLR, Bridge or mirrorless camera that lets you set aperture/shutter speed. • A fully charged battery (and a spare if you have one). • A BLANK memory card (and a spare if you have one). • Your camera manual – If you can find it!
Optional equipment that you can bring on the day:
• A tripod • A circular polarising filter • Shutter release cable/remote shutter release
Tutor Profile – Vanessa Lees
After many years of working as an IT and Business professional, I decided to follow my passion and retrain as a professional photographer, gaining a first class BA(Hons) degree in Photography from the University of West London in June 2015. I had been a photographer, in my spare time, for many years but I wanted a more formal qualification and an opportunity to be in an environment which would enable and encourage me to be more experimental and creative in my work.
Although portraiture and event photography is one of my specialist areas, fortunately I have been able to marry up my passion for photography with my obsession for travel and exploring the world. Travel photography has become an increasing part of my work and I undertake several trips a year to work on landscapes, travel portraits and personal projects.
I also teach photography to adults and children, either on a 1-1 basis or in groups. I really enjoy teaching and seeing people develop their skills and confidence. I’m very enthusiastic about my craft and encourage my classes to break the rules and get more creative in their work.
